Co-Founder Joe Simon Talks the Benefits of Pili Oi
In June 2018, Fernando Limbo, Joe Simon and Alex Khumerts started their company PurePili (@purepili). Here, Joe Simon talks the process behind one of the best quick-drying oils in my skincare repertoire.
WHAT IS THE BACKSTORY BEHIND PILI OIL?
Like all great Filipino stories, we started out in the kitchen! We actually were looking into distributing pili nuts in the United States. Through our research and networking, we came across Pili Oil and here we are! The inspiration behind Pili Oil was through a conversation we had with a good friend (a Naturopathic Doctor based in the Philippines). Our research showed that there was opportunity for Pili Oil use in the market place, given its present uses among local people. Most importantly, there was huge financial opportunity for farmers as another stream of income.
WHAT IS THE HISTORY BEHIND PILI OIL?
Pili Oil comes from the Pili Fruit that surrounds the Pili Nut within the fertile valley of Bicolandia. Pili trees are most abundantly found in the Bicol Region of the Philippines, the majority of which come from Sorsogon. The Pili tree is a "stress-loving" tree—the more stress that's applied to the tree, the more fruit it bears. Traditionally, Pili Oil has been used for both skincare and skin ailments because of its nourishing and antibacterial properties. Why Pili oil? It has the highest levels of Vitamin A and E then any other natural oil, and is enriched given the tree is grown in the Volcanic soil around the region. It also absorbs very well into the skin, leaving no residue.
WHAT IS YOUR MISSION?
Our mission is to support financial innovation for the Bicol Farmers and locals by sharing the deep tradition of joy and the loving spirit of the Filipinos through Pili Oil-based products.
HOW IS PILI OIL MADE?
Pili Oil is produced by using your hand to cold-press the Pili Pulp. Once settled, the liquid goes through a mechanical process to extract all pieces of the pulp.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS BEHIND PILI OIL?
Benefits are plenty! For your skin, they includes vitamin-enriched and moisturizing nutrients, along with anti-aging properties which help lighten dark skin circles or blemishes. For hair, application before going to bed or in the morning keeps your hair soft and less frizzy. For cuticles, there’s a reduction in those pesky skin strands by keeping your cuticle bed moisturized.
