My Go-To Routine

For a healthy and happy face

Fun fact: I'm sitting here writing this as I try out a new mask (review to come). Hint: It's carbonated!

Anyway, now that I've gotten that out of the way (I was really excited), I thought it would be good to post about my skincare routines. Of course, they change every couple of months—usually by season—but this is my most up-to-date version based on my current skin needs. Right now, the weather here in Philadelphia is a little back-and-forth. Whiplash weather, as I consider it, has made my complexion completely confused. On days that it's really hot out, my pores hate me for using heavy duty moisturizers (my skin is infamous for getting flaky and dry in the cold and windy weather), but as soon as I move to a lighter skin routine, it goes back to sweater weather. So, I've recently crafted up this routine to serve both purposes to hold me over until the summer officially arrives. I do the following every night. No. Matter. What.

Did you know that cleaning your face at night is more important than in the morning? It makes sense if you think about it. I mean, you've been running around in polluted air, touching your face after being on the bus (or car) and going to the gym. Bottom line is, your face really goes through a lot during the day—making it all the more important to make it squeaky clean at night!

Over the years, I've played and discovered which skincare products are best for this—especially with my skin. And I think that I finally have it down pact (at least until another season comes along).

STEP ONE: Since I go to the gym almost every day, I've gotten into the habit of washing my face while in the shower. It started as an accident, and, quite frankly, out of pure laziness, but I've found that my skin looks a lot better when I do this. Probably to do with the fact that my pores are open from the steam, allowing the product to really soak in. My favorite cleanser to use is OSEA Malibu Ocean Cleanser. Aside from the fact that this is a really great company (its mission is to create products that are safe to both us and earth), the products always feel amazing and are made of wonderful ingredients! It also doesn't hurt that they come in glass bottles—great for the environment and looks. The Ocean Cleanser, specifically, caters towards normal/combination skin. It's made with seaweed, and has a gel-like texture and a light green hue. There's even vegan lactic acid, which is derived from beets, that lightly exfoliates. Not to mention the fact that it also smells really good and fresh—almost as if it was just made in front of you. I love using this in any season, as it does it's job without being too heavy or leaving any residue.

STEP TWO: Just to be extra sure that I've washed off all of the dirt, I use a cotton ball and swipe Garnier Micellar Water on ever inch of my face. It's super simple (and even takes off makeup). No harsh rubbing, and it takes two seconds. It has no scent, which is always nice if you're weird about certain smells, and it comes in a clear bottle with a colored cap. The entire presentation just screams cleanliness and simplicity.

STEP 3: Depending on how my skin is feeling, I like to alter between the three Glossier serums. Since these babies came out last year, I've been completely obsessed. And if there's anything that buy from this blog, it should be this—but not just one. All three. They each work in different ways, because, well, your face is never the same.

Glossier Pure is perfect if it's your time of the month (or just super hormonal). I also bring it EVERY time I fly. It's the first thing that I pack. Why? Well, when you get off of the plane, do you ever feel like you've aged five to 10 years? It's not your imagination. The air on the plane is extremely dry. Not to mention that your pretty much contained in a small flying machine for over an hour—sharing all of the same bad breath and germs. Gross, right? So it only seems reasonable to bring this little guy onto the plane. I pat on three drops of the serum and do anything and everything possible to not touch my face for the duration of the flight. And then once I get off the plane, I repeat the same thing. I've literally gone from breaking out after every flight to not having a single problem spot. So, thank you, Glossier, for helping me out with this.

Now, if you're anything like me, you don't get enough sleep. Whether it's work, insomnia, too much caffeine or stress—I never seem to get enough rest. Hence the dark circles under my eyes and the occasional dreary complexion on my face. This is where Super Glow comes in. With Vitamin C and Magnesium, this serum is perfect for adding that extra glow to your cheeks. This is probably the one that I use the most often out of the three—but, hey, that's an editor's life.

And then comes number all probably know that staying hydrated and drinking water helps a clear complexion. But, because we are all humans, Super Bounce has your back.

If you've only related to one of these cases, then fine. Just invest in that one. But if you're having trouble choosing which serum is best for you because almost all of these apply to you, invest in all three.

STEP 4:  To finish off the night, I always like to end with a light moisturizer. Occasionally, I switch it up to an oil or overnight mask, but on most evenings, I use Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream. I was gifted this product from work, but am definitely buying it when I run out. It comes in a decently large container, and is so light that I don't feel like I'm going to bed with a bunch of gunk on my face. I'm not sure if this is just me or the actual formula, but it also has a cooling effect. I look forward to using it every night and morning. It's honestly an all-around moisturizer that I believe is perfect for any skin type! Light-weight, lightly-scented and not too oily. Here's to perfection (clink, clink).

And that's it! This is the premises for all of my usual routines. Fast, quick, easy and effective. I hardly branch away from this, but when I do, I only switch it up one product at a time.

Stay tuned for updates on this—after all, your skin never stays the same.
