The Serum Diaries
If you’ve been following me on Instagram lately, you’re probably not surprised about this article. In fact, you were probably expecting it.
I have combination skin. Sometimes it’s oily, or dry, or perfect. Honestly, it all depends on the weather. In the bone chilling winters, my skin becomes extremely dry. In the summer, oily. The spring and fall? It depends, but I tend to have more breakouts (I think there’s some kind of relation to my seasonal allergies).
And the only type of product that seems to have a consistent effect is the beautiful serum. Or as I like to call it, golden liquid. After posting about them for weeks, I wanted to gather things simply for all of you lovelies. Here, I wanted to talk about some of my top serums, and exactly what I use them for.
I’ve been using three drops of this every morning since June, and my skin has never looked so awake in the morning. An ongoing love, I actually wrote about this serum before, BUT AM STILL NOT OVER ITS PERFECTION. Seriously. If you suffer from dull looking skin in the morning like me, invest in this. Made from a mix of ginger root, sunflower and tamanu oils, it’s the perfect pick-me-up to skin fatigue (and also smells lightly like orange).
Although I’ve been seeing these cute colorful bottles around for years, I only first got to try Drunk Elephant products in the past few months. Crazy, right? And aside from the smart packaging, they are absolutely amazing! The Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil is perhaps my lesser-used of all five, but only because I like to lather it on after using the T.L.C Framboos Glycolic Night Serum. I tend to do this before bedtime, as the glycolic night serum works as a type of sleeping mask and exfoliator. The result? A baby-smooth and glowing complexion that screams well-rested, even if I’m not.
I may be biased towards Pili Oil since it’s made in the Philippines, but regardless, this is one of THE BEST moisturizing serums I’ve used in awhile. In fact, I even choose it above the Kiehls on some mornings. Rich in vitamins A & E, I just love how versatile the oil is. You can use it on your face, hair or body, and just a few drops go a long way. A huge component that makes this little guy stand out is how quick-drying it is. You’ll find that many serums leave a bit of residue on the surface of your face—oh how much I love seeing it rub off on my phone screen. NOT. Pili Oil is different. There is absolutely no residue left after using this, meaning that my skin reps all of the benefits by absorbing every last drop. PS: this is a product that I will be bringing to Hawaii. That’s how much I love it!
Herb Market Botanicals is a new brand that I’ve come across thanks to my little skincare blog. All of the products are made with a holistic mantra in mind, using only the best natural ingredients (this facial oil features Jojoba seed and rose hip oils), and come in beautiful, simple packaging that any skincare aficionado will swoon for. I’m thinking of switching to this oil completely after a nice long exfoliating mask or cleansing season for extreme moisturizing and optimized skin nutrition. But, hey, that’s just me.
Whenever I feel like my skin is just a bit too hydrated, I switch from my Kiehls serum to this concentrate from Red Earth. Made with Kakadu Plum—rich in Vitamin C—I love how light the serum is. Similar to the Pili oil, I don’t have to worry about my skin becoming too greasy when using this, so it’s super ideal on warmer weather days.
